Building on the fantastic response to the City of Sanctuary movement in towns and cities across the Yorkshire & Humber region, City of Sanctuary and the Northern Refugee Centre held the UK’s first ‘Region of Sanctuary’ conference in Bradford on Thursday 25th February.

 

At Kala Sangam, St Peter’s House, Forster Square, Bradford BD1 4TY this conference provided opportunities for City of Sanctuary groups, refugee organisations and local government to share inspirational examples of good practice, and build new coalitions and partnerships across the region.

 

Speakers and workshop leaders included:

 

Inderjit Bhogal, Chair of City of Sanctuary Jonathan Ellis, Director of Policy, The Refugee Council Will Sutcliffe, Co-ordinator, Bradford City of Sanctuary Dr Hannah Lewis, Independent Researcher and author Jim Steinke, Chief Executive, Northern Refugee Centre David Brown, Integration Manager, Yorkshire Migration Partnership Cath Baldock, ASSIST Sheffield Craig Barnett, National Coordinator, City of Sanctuary

 

Participants were able to choose up to 2 workshops from:

 

1. Regional Integration Strategies

2. Destitution and how to tackle it

3. The Campaign Against Cashlessness

4. Becoming a Town or City of Sanctuary

5. Engaging with Local Authorities

6. Right to Work Campaign

7. Engaging Refugee Community Organisations
